چکیده
Intelligence analysis is fundamentally an exercise in expert judgment made under conditions of uncertainty. These judgments are used to inform consequential decisions. Following the major intelligence failure that led 2003 war Iraq, organizations implemented policies for communicating probability their assessments. Virtually all chose convey using standardized linguistic lexicons which ordered set select terms (e.g., highly likely) associated with numeric ranges 80-90%). We review benefits and drawbacks this approach, drawing on psychological research communication studies have examined effectiveness lexicons. further discuss how probabilities can overcome many shortcomings probabilities. Numeric not without they more difficult elicit may be misunderstood by receivers poor numeracy). However, these ameliorated training practice, whereas pitfalls endemic approach. propose that, balance, outweigh drawbacks. Given enormous costs failure, community should reconsider its reliance Our discussion also has implications other domains such as climate science.

Words or numbers? Communicating risk of adverse effects in written consumer health information: a systematic review and meta-analysis
BACKGROUND Various types of framing can influence risk perceptions, which may have an impact on treatment decisions and adherence. One way of framing is the use of verbal terms in communicating the probabilities of treatment effects. We systematically reviewed the comparative effects of words versus numbers in communicating the probability of adverse effects to consumers in written health infor...
متن کاملTalking probabilities: communicating probabilistic information with words and numbers
The number of knowledge-based systems that build on Bayesian belief networks is increasing. The construction of such a network however requires a large number of probabilities in numerical form. This is often considered a major obstacle, one of the reasons being that experts are reluctant to provide numerical probabilities. The use of verbal probability expressions as an additional method of el...
متن کاملWords or numbers? The evaluation of probability expressions in general practice.
A sample of 56 general practitioners were asked to rate, on a percentage scale, 23 words or phrases which denote frequency or likelihood. The hypothetical context of the exercise was that of communicating to patients the probability of a side-effect (headache) arising from an unspecified prescription medicine. Median phrase ratings ranged from 'never' at 0% to 'certain' at 95% with a 50% rating...
متن کاملCompetitive Intelligence Text Mining: Words Speak
Competitive intelligence (CI) has become one of the major subjects for researchers in recent years. The present research is aimed to achieve a part of the CI by investigating the scientific articles on this field through text mining in three interrelated steps. In the first step, a total of 1143 articles released between 1987 and 2016 were selected by searching the phrase "competitive intellige...
